5 Americans Back In U.S. After Prisoner Swap With Iran

Each of the freed Americans was met by groups of friends and family carrying small U.S. flags on the tarmac at Fort Belvoir. Smiles, kisses and warm embraces as they were reunited helped to stave off the chilly morning air. After 15 minutes, the group moved inside where the celebration continued.

Five U.S. citizens detained by Iran were freed Monday in a high-stakes, complex diplomatic deal brokered between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Biden administration that included the transfer of $6 billion in unfrozen Iranian oil assets and the release of five Iranians facing charges in the U.S.

The Biden administration has cleared the way for the release of five American citizens detained in Iran by issuing a blanket waiver for international banks to transfer $6 billion in frozen Iranian money from South Korea to Qatar without fear of U.S. sanctions. In addition, as part of the deal, the administration has agreed to release five Iranian citizens held in the United States.
